i thought JSC was going to pull out something more different/provactive but i was wrong. he did a nice job but you did a great job! you not only show the sentinel's face but wonderwoman doing something more interesting rather than JSC's take.
also, you inked yours so your art has more contrast. the boldness of the color contrast makes the image appear to be more agressive and exciting.
and yeah, more than a decade later — you still draw the best wolvering in the business.
You won it hands down. The Sentinel was the deciding piece for me before I even saw both pics. It was in the description of the art and to me it came down to who drew what was agreed on.
Jeff's piece could be Wolvie and WW running through a Colon for all the detail there is. And his Wonder Woman looks pretty weak.
I like how your Wonder Woman hog tied the Sentinel. Jeff's piece of just holding open a whole for Wolverine could have been replaced with nearly anyone. Yours was a destinctly Wonder Woman power being used.
If I can be critical here I have to say the claws do not look right, I like the way Campbell illustrated the claws, but Overall I think your work here looks more finished and we can see the sentinel face and large hand. So the positioning seems clearer.
You've got my vote Jim, keep up the great work and I hope the All Star project goes well for you.
Ok, Jim you get my vote, for the following, in the past hour you managed to take the subject and put it in a way dynamic shot, you have a nice Hiroshige element with the sentinel being cropped, you've established a clear fore, middle, and background, you're composition has taken full advantage of the space allowed, you drew a foot, and all of you characters have appropriate expressions.
I like a couple things about Campbell's, but it looks more like a good starting point for a piece, not as finished, or refined.
BTW, I way dig the the feeling of your brushwork here, it truly adds to your subject mater.
See you in San Diego, after I win the contest on monday...
God, Jim, I just remembered how much I missed your X-Men. JSC, love your stuff, but Jim brings back memories of my first X-Men book all those years ago. Good job Jim!
I could try to blather on some, but this piece is just more my tastes. And holy crap, I can't believe this was done in one hour. Molto benni, Jim; bravi!
My vote goes to Jim. The differences in wonder woman alone are where Jim scores more points. Jim gives her a strong yet feminine look/pose. Not muscular, not sickly thin, in a pose that says wonder woman,(not hulk smash.)
Other winning points, 1. You can tell what they're ripping into.
2. Wolverine’s mask and Claws just look so bad ass. His shoulder gear also looks ridged and slick. The boots are much more visible and distinctly Wolverine
no doubt about it, jim took this challenge to heart. great layouts with the sentinel peaking in the foreground. no doubt a great piece for the auction.
congratulations to both and thatnks for putting in an hour that will go along way for CBLDF.
thanks to JSC for taking the time to join the contest. you're the one that finally got jim to put pencil & inks to paper so i am eternally grateful!
Yeah so I'd say if anything Jim, is known for his blistering speed at drawing these amazing pin-ups. with that I have to say "WOW" I've seen Jim draw tons of sketches for people at Cons that are beautiful and this is just AMAZING! I am really floored by how much he did in this pic in a full hour he can really pack a wall'op in ten min' but look what he can do in an hour!!!!!!!!!!! Hail to tha' king BABY!
P.S. I love JCS pic too but had to vote for this beautiful pic!
I'm in awe w/ both pieces, but I'll have to give it up to the mentor, Jim effin' Lee.
Both Wolverine's kick surrious culo, so ultimately it came down to the better Wonder Woman and which looked more intuitive in that a Sentinel's gettin' torn apart.
My mind is numb right now. I can't believe Jim Lee just battled J. Scott Campbell. :O The best o' the best!!
This was by far the toughest Iron Chef competition yet. Awesome AWESOME job by both artists.
That said..
I gotta give my vote to Jim Lee. Jim's the master when it comes to drawing Wolvie. And while I love the dynamic layout of Campbell's pic, Jim Lee gets props for showing us the Sentinel.
Both amazing but then again, 1). Jim's been at it longer, 2). has been doing plenty of superhero comics work as of late, 3). Oh yeah and Jim has drawn both characters for print more often then Jeff (if ever)
great stuff, but i gotta go with jim lee's. love the sentinel in the corner getting rocked, campbell's is great, but there's no sentinel there, and jim's looks a little more finished.
so great, i love it when you guys do this stuff, definitely my favorite challenge since the first between ale and francis
My vote goes to Jim, for two reasons, Wonder Woman and the Sentinel.
Both of you did brilliant Wolvie's, I prefered Jim's meatier WW and if I didn't know the theme I wouldn't know Jeff's pair were going after a Sentinel.
Still, damn hard choice, damn good drawings and I hope you guys get a good showing for the auction.
As much as I liked being able to see J. Scott Campbell doing Wolverine (I'm not sure I ever have before, actually...kind of reminds me of the why Joe Mad used to draw Wolvie pre-Phallanx Covenant), I've got to give it to Jim here.
I like the compositions equally for different reasons. J. Scott's is a nicely designed pin-up, very full of energy...Jim's composition is very cinematic, like a still from a movie, and dynamic.
I think the J. Scott one has a little more energy (due to the slightly more cartoonish, exaggerated look), but Jim's just looks so incredibly *solid.* The other one looks like a rough sketch for a cover, where this one doesn't look like it'd need much extra work to function as an actual double-page spread or poster.
Not to mention that J. Scott's manner of including the Sentinel is...kinda questionable, lol. The Sentinel in this one of Jim's looks f-ing awesome.
In one word: solid. I can't believe you were able to do all that in one hour.
Both so great and I have always been such a big fan of both of yours but always a dedicated Campbell fan above anyone!!! But How the Heckin Frick did you manage to pull this off in that amount of time... My vote must lie here... I'm sure Jeff will understand!!
wow... Jim Lee is the master. They are both great drawings, and J.Scott's Wolverine is really really awesome but so is Jim's, and his Wonder Woman is just the definitive Wonder Woman. That is what she should always look like. So Jim, you got my vote.
and I'm not sour at all that you guys didn't take my suggestion... :P
Wow Jim.You never cease to amaze, man. Hope to be half your talent someday. Can't wait for All-Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder. You got my vote on this one man. Great, great, work.
Althought I am a great fan of J. Scott 's work , I go with Jim on this piece ! I think I'm gonna bid at the auction , at least it will help the CBLDF !
can you draw x-men again? not the current storyline, but back in the good ole-days.. just restart that story arch.. I don't think many would mind. I vote for jim's
This was a tough one, as both had there own strengths. Campbell's was more finished looking, and his Wolverine looks like it's going to burst out of the page. Awesome piece. However, my vote goes to Jim. His piece looks more like a sketch, but is more dynamic, and is a no hold barred, all out fight scene. GREAT layout! I'd love to see this piece blown up into a cover sized finished piece.
Both pieces are great!!!But my vote goes to the MASTER-Jim "grab the pebble from my palm" Lee!!! Jeff's piece is great! Both display alot of energy, but Jim's piece is far better!
Just found out about this over at the artofjimlee fansite. I've got to go with Jim on this one because the Sentinel theme is clearly understood. Jeff has a more characterstic Wolverine and Wonder Woman but Jim's gives them more strength. At first glance it may look like Jim's is better because of his detail but both artists really captured great facial expressions. Again, the theme is more clearly understood with Jim's piece. But wow, Jeff vs Jim...hella cool!
Jim gets my vote... but I gotta say Jeff's wolverine rocks. For me, Jim's ink job scored some points, actually showing the sentinel is a plus, and Jeff's wonder woman looks a little weak when compared to Jim's. Excellent work by both artists.
I'm at awe with what Jim Lee can do in an hour. I love both pieces though, but I feel Jim's piece is stronger. I think had the contest had an extended time frame and featured finalized art renditions (although Jim pretty much finished his) maybe the tally might be close. Again, I think Campbell did a marvelous job, in the big picture it's not about speed, or who's better, or whatever. Just excellent pieces by great talent doing a wonderful thing for charity. I look forward to more contests such as these. Well done.
Good show from both artists, but my vote goes to Jim Lee. Better composition, better rendering of the characters, and, as everyone else has pointed out, there actually IS a Sentinel in this one, plus Wonder Woman looks a little more like Wonder Woman should look, here.
While I had been a JSC fan for year and years, I've gotta hand it to Jimbo simply because... well... there's a Sentinel in this one. Jim not only did the job, but he made it more pulchritudinous that our wildest expectations could have taken it. Bravo, mister Lee. Bravo.
Umm, I accidentally voted on the flickr site. But here's what I wrote there:
"Jeff's is great, but I love Jim's because I can feel the action better, I can see the sentinel getting gutted whereas Jeff's feels more like the sentinel is about to be gutted."
Both pieces are very good, but i gotta give it to Jim. I can't believe the amount of detail he's put in just an hour, his pic looks almost finished. Anyway, i'd like to congratulate you metti guys for doing the iron chef battles, for us, aspiring artists, is an unique experience.

I vote for Mr. Jim. So dynamic. An Inspiration as usual. Jeff, awesome work as well; it was a tough choice.
This one edges out the other, in my mind, because of the clearer image of the Sentinel. Wonder Woman was not prominent enough in either, tho'...
My vote goes to Jim. Incredible piece, I love both but I'd give the edge to Jim since I love how you can see a bit of the Sentinel.
I gotta say that both Wolverine's look incredible!
Great job guys!
=rc=
got go with this one, it was a hard choice but the wonder woman made the difference for me
Sweet! Tough choice but I gotta go with Jim's only because you can see the Sentinel. Man, do I love the energy of the ink work here.
This one. Love both artists, but I have to agree with the dude above- it shows the Sentinal, so it wins.
Fuck! Jim, you know, this is injust to Campbell... you draw THE Wolverine (and I can see the Sentinel).
Yeah gotta vote for Jim's on this one. More dynamic and you can actually tell they are tearing through a sentinel.
Jim gets my vote. But Campbell ALMOST goy my vote with the look on his wolvie's face.
Awesome guys!
jim, you are the master at wolverine, i would love to see you back on the x-men, or maybe the ultimates, any chance?

Nice job!
this one because you can see the Sentinel
this is a genius idea of a competition does this happen anywhere else it's awesome
I 2 lavori sono pieni d' azione però preferisco questo.
La faccia incazzata di Wonder Woman è perfetta.. e poi mi mancava un Wolverine stile Jim Lee!
Grande!

God, Jim, I just remembered how much I missed your X-Men. JSC, love your stuff, but Jim brings back memories of my first X-Men book all those years ago. Good job Jim!
Both sketches came out great, but I love Jim's Wonder Woman.
Sorry Jeff, Noone beats the master at his own game! Jim, you rock!!
I could try to blather on some, but this piece is just more my tastes. And holy crap, I can't believe this was done in one hour. Molto benni, Jim; bravi!

I'm in awe w/ both pieces, but I'll have to give it up to the mentor, Jim effin' Lee.

omg...both are great but...i wanna see john byrne instead of jsc..who is great...but yeah...no sentinel so disqualified? what am i talking about?!
It wasn't a fair fight... Jim Lee defined the modern day appearance of wolverine... I can't believe he did all that in one hour.
While I loved Campbell's idea of having Wolvie and Wonder Woman busting out of the Sentinel, for the overall artwork I have to go with Jimm Lee.
Wow Jim.You never cease to amaze, man. Hope to be half your talent someday. Can't wait for All-Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder. You got my vote on this one man. Great, great, work.
Mr. Lee says to Mt. Campbell:
"When I left you, I was but the learner, now I am the master."
Gotta go with Jim on this one.
Have to go with Jim on this one. The layout of this piece makes it look like it's been taken right out of a comic book, thus more dynamic.
Defenitly Jim. I always adore Campbell's works but this one, Wolvie look more slashin and rules the drawing with w.w. Way to go, Jim.
I vote the Jim.
i gotta say Jim you're THE MAN.
And for those who didn't understand you've got my vote.
OK Mr Campbell did a nice job but we don't really see the sentinel and i'm not kindz fan of Wolverine having that big big claws.
Your work is better contrasted so it capt the attention since the first look.
Ahhhh, X-Men time was a sweet time.
BUT BUT BUT, why does Wonder Woman be a support cast in both works and Wolverine definitively the star of your works ;p.
Jim gets my vote! His works seems to me more "complete".
I gotta echo other comments by saying the Sentinel is much clearer in your piece Jim. Nice work by you and Jeff.
I consider the Wolverines a push, but Jim's Wonder Woman takes it for him.
Gotta hand it to J.Scott for being such a good sport about this,
but my vote goes to Jim without question.
I'd like to see a Lee/Portacio showdown.
I love 'em both, but Jim Lee has a bit more to it.
Jim gets my vote, can't believe he did this in an hour?!?!?
Jim Lee, hands down. Wow...that is amazing.
i'm going with jim, because jeff's looks like they're busting through a wall and not fighting a sentinel.
I would go with Jim, very dynamic.
With the sentinel there is a feeling ofmore tension
This was a tough one, as both had there own strengths. Campbell's was more finished looking, and his Wolverine looks like it's going to burst out of the page. Awesome piece. I'd love to see this piece blown up into a cover sized finished piece.
Two great pieces! What fun to look at.
Paul Singh
i vote for jim lee. but i agree both wolvies looked badass. jim's was a slightly better wolverine and i think he captured the topic best.
No contest. I'm with Mr. Lee.
Both pieces are great!!!But my vote goes to the MASTER-Jim "grab the pebble from my palm" Lee!!! Jeff's piece is great! Both display alot of energy, but Jim's piece is far better!
Jim wins this one!!!

going for jim!
It's a pity there isn't the sentinel in Jeff'one..
But Jim, you have to admict that that wolverine pose is really abused (maybe because it works soo good?)
Cia!
My vote goes to Jim. I a big fan of Jeff’s work also, but the composition and dynamics of Jim’s piece with the Sentinel are just awesome.
The real winner here is the CBLDF. I commend both artists for taking their time to create these stunning works for charity.
Great job, guys.
-Greg Tumbarello
My vote goes to Jim's piece.
Both Wolverines are great, both Wonder Women are a little weak, so it's the Sentinel that's the tie-breaker, and Jim's wins it.
Both are spiffy. Jim's is much spiffy-er, though.
Can't vote against the man-god Jim Lee.
I like the sparkley eye and machine mouth, and the big ol' hand. Dare I say the sentinel steals it from even Wolvie and WW?
Both pieces are very good, but i gotta give it to Jim. I can't believe the amount of detail he's put in just an hour, his pic looks almost finished. Anyway, i'd like to congratulate you metti guys for doing the iron chef battles, for us, aspiring artists, is an unique experience.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME????
Jim, you did this in one hour??? man o man. scott campbell did a great piece, but yours is outta this world.
Once again, YOU are da man. in the words of brett hart..."you're the best there was, best there is, and best there ever will be."
alexander - big fan
I vote for this Jim Lee Piece
a bit late but I vote for Jim's piece...
