First Con Sketch 2006

This past week I had a chance to attend the amazing Angouleme Comics Festival named after the eponymous town. It was as beautifully quaint (if you can call 230,000 comics fans descending upon and taking over a town that) and historic as I last recall from my visit there two years ago.

Had a chance to meet and hang out with a bunch of talent from all around the globe, many of whose work I was encountering for the first time, do a couple of panels and even got to squeeze in 50 or so sketches for patient fans during the 4 day affair.

Didn't bother with a digital camera so am relying on the fans themselves to send in a scan or two. Some even shot digital video off their cameras as I drew...maybe those will show up somewhere online too.

It even snowed which as I understand, it's never done at a comics festival in Angouleme, ever. That said, here's the first scan I received--posted above. And go here for a bigger shot.

It's freezing cold here in Paris. I'm sitting in my hotel enjoying a bit of wifi and wrapping up a much delayed cover.

Even as this is my 10th or so stay here in Paris, dating back to 1984 when I came here bumming around Europe as a college student, the city still amazes. The bistro food, the amazing comics shops, the late night live music scene.

I'm running on about 4 hours of sleep a night and only feel it around 6-7pm when it starts getting dark and my primordial brain wants to crawl into a deep, dark cave for shelter. Unfortunately, that's when I start my signings so sometimes I have a hard time focusing at the shops. But, today's my last signing here in Paris and I'm off back to San Diego to get back to work, WORK if you know what I mean.

America's Next Top Comic Artist!!!!!

There are BIG things going on at Wildstorm this year and you could be a part of it!

Beginning at the Wizard World LA show in March, Wildstorm's opening their doors again to find the next talented guy or girl to join our studio!

In year's past, we've had many talented creators come through the door including, Travis Charest, J. Scott Campbell, Aron Wiesenfeld and Lee Bermejo just to name a few! Even most of the Gelatometti crew here started off as interns like, Alé Garza, Carlos D'Anda, and Scott Iwahashi, so sharpen those pencils and get your work ready for the big show!

We'll be there reviewing portfolios and maybe even hiring someone right there on the spot. Who knows, anything could happen!

And even if you're not looking to join the wild world of comics, stop by and say "Hi!"

Hey guys it's been awhile :D ! Just wanted to let you all know I hadn't forgotten about you! The holidays, and work, have just had me super occupied. Anyways just wanted to drop a couple quick notes.

First off, I have some Skye Runner stuff that I'll soon be able to share with you guys very soon! It's just a matter of getting it all together! Also I have some Iron Gelato stuff in the works! It'll be tough to top our last set, but I think I might have some good ideas ;) !

Con season is starting as well! Look for me and some of the crew at next month's Wondercon in San Francisco, and then New York later in the month. This year already has provided some delightful challenges, and changes that's got me super excited!

The above art is just something out of the sketchbook. My good friend, and artist supreme, Mark Brooks, is the current artist on Marvel's New X-Men. So, reading his book got me a little inspired to crank out an X-23. She's a pretty cool character to draw, and I just wanted to give it a shot!

With that, expect me to be more regular on here. Next week I should have some more exciting stuff to post about! Peace!

A quickie here today. Got to run to the airport...ah, the work never lets up.

Here's one of the first sketches of the New Year--one of my favorite DC characters of all...Green Lantern. Was a big fan of Alan Scott, Hal Jordan and of course, Jon Stewart. Great concept, great characters. Why they can't do an amazing liveaction movie with today's technology is beyond me. I'd ditch the weakness to yellow, wood, or any combination of the two though. As a fan, I love the classic elements of these characters but even these greats need a bit of updating. Nips and tucks though...nips and tucks.

Bigger shot here.

Bringing in the New Year

Got so much art backed up that I think 2006 will see a resurgence of never before seen art. Here's the first. A quick Batman and Catwoman did for a friend for the holidays. I like incorporating some pencil work on top of regular black and white art to provide a little texture and also to separate some costume details and toss in a few subtle lighting effects. The obsession with bats comes from the recent run on Batman and Robin...hope you all had a great end of 2005. Mine was very quiet and peaceful; was in Tokyo for the holidays for business and some fun. I have some photos I need to format and will put up laters...
