detailing 2

(entry ricH)

Here's another piece.

This was the preview and cover image for issue 1. This piece had to be edited for the mild monster you can also catch a peep of some boobage. It's pretty tame really. I always find it interesting that extreme graphic violence is ok in the United States.....but hide those nipples!

anyway. Again this piece has a ton of detail, now with the "magic" of the can see the whole thing after I got my hands on it. Lots of tiny details and little places to get lost in. Lots of different textures, and objects to work with. I spread this piece out over a few days. I wanted to enjoy the process so I would ink a few hours on this and then work on something else. I don't normally work that way but if I have the luxury..I take advantage of it.

large scan might take a moment to load. Both new WW scans are off the original boards for even extra high quality viewing here.

yeah i know what you mean.
i'm european and nipples only bother me when they are on bat-suits. during the day they show playmate photoshoots in austria.
but to be honest i don't get censorship at all.

coming back to the picture-it's insane like everything you ink.(and i don't have the time now to point out everything i like about it)
but what kind of brushes, pens and other tools are you using?

cheers B

Nipples represent life! Too bad there's someone who thinks it's something that should be not shown.

That's a great and complex image.

hahaha I can tell you like nipples Vittorio~!

tools tools.

Right now on Whilce I am back to using only 2 things. I use a hunt 102 crowquill and I use a Windsor Newton series 7 number 3 brush.

that's it.

the ink is Koh i Nor 'ultradraw' or 'universal' (generally which ever the store has in stock) white if I make a mistake. Generally for Whilce I have to use white out a little in the panel borders because he throws so many speed lines. I let them go as far as I need them off panel(meaning over the panel border) so the look "in panel" is right. If I try and stop on a dime right at the panel border it affects the brush strokes because you are holding let them fly~!

Thanks for answering technique questions. I love hearing how the pros work. Could you answer one more? On a piece like this one (the one with the demon with the wardrobe malfunction) - how much of the piece is done with guides/curves/templates and how much is freehand. Thanks again!

Maaan your inks are siiiiick!!...Scott Williams better watch out!!!

Your inks are sick man!

A great match for Whilce's style.

What happened to Art Shake?

I don't use a lot of templates. If I have a lot of work to do I will sometimes speed things up by busting them out. It takes a little longer to freehand stuff but I think the extra time is worth it.

If something is obviously a straight line use a ruler....for curves and stuff.....try and push yourself to learn to work with out all these crutches. Circles...unless a lot of them need to be the same size I will freehand them.

another rule what makes your work look best. That's the goal right? To show your art in the best light.

Who's Scott Williams?

Yeah... I'm hysterical.

Keep up the great work.

The Woldstorm books rock.

Tell Ryan I'm counting the days 'til a Phantom Guard relaunch.

No, I'm not kidding. Was seriously pissed when that book got cancelled.

Call me "Mr. Me Too"

I'd love to see Phanton Guard back. I liked it alot myself.

and hxero you're probably right Whilce based them on his own countries mythological creatures. If you are from the Philippines then you are correct.

I was hoping my posts would draw these guys back onto the blog more. I am working on it. We're all really busy right now....but I am kicking them in the butt a little more to try and get them posting more frequently.
