i like karl's becuase he chose to do a scene rather than a pin-up. i think maul's character is rather unique and not just another Hulk... so it adds another dimension. congrats to both.
I stayed up till 1:45 am just to see this, and BY FAR this was the best "battle" yet. I thought this was an awesome idea when you guys came up with the Iron Chef thing, and this is what it's all about. Two great pieces, just fantastic both of them (in all candor), and both very different. This is where "judging" art becomes ridiculous because of how great and unique they are. I love Ale's composition and storytelling, but then again Karl sets the scene perfectly as well but in a serene environment. I stuck to my guns to vote for one and only one each time, and for some reason Karl's scene just "spoke to me" more than Ale's. No idea why, but this was clearly my favorite battle to date, and I can't wait to see more and more.
P.S. Il Gelatone in Roma has the greatest selection of gelato in all of Italy, look for it on Via Dei Serpenti off of Via Nazionale.
Ale did a wonderful job that shows the transformation exquisitely, much like a lion hatches from the egg... I don't know what the **** that means, anyways I'm going Karl here- sorry Ale.
Karl great job I like yours better due to there being more visual narrative going on here.
Awesome layout, mood, etc. Karl! Coming up with this idea alone would have taken most people the full hour. I'm assuming you know how to draw elephants from memory :)
my vote goes to karl. great layout with a very serene feel to it. ale's work is really dynamic, which captures the hulk feel (don't know the background on Maul but am guessing it is a hulk-iteration) but this is different, unexpected yet truly a great piece of art.
congrats to both on beautiful pieces of art (sure doesn't look like it couldn't be done in an hour).
To be completely honest with you, I've never been all that impressed with your Superman/superhero work. But this...this I like. A lot.
Perhaps it's the balance here between black and white, whereas most of your mainstream work is pretty plain and relies on color to flesh it out.
Looking at your website, I guess I underestimated you. Those Catwoman comissions are f-ing sweet. I also quite like the Wolverine and Namor pin-ups there. And I absolutely love the style used (and the storytelling) in "Cats Can Keep You From Bermuda." Wow. I'm definately a fan now.
Back to this sketch...something about it seems so much more "real," where the mainstream stuff looks so cartoony. I have no idea...but I wish I could see more of *this.*
Got give it to Karal---though the decision was hard, i think Caral cought a unique side to mual---but still captured the essence of the Character. Ale, was off the chain, don't get me wrong, but it reminded me more of the Hulk. Anyway, Both, are awesome. i'd like to battle one of you guys some day, hehe(Wishful thinking)
Karl's Maul goes in the complete opposite end of the emotional spectrum showing him very reflective and curious. The quiet and hushed tone is a nice contrast to his big size, but perfectly fits w/ the elephants. The only thing I'd maybe change is having Maul play w/ an elephant's horns/tusks in contrast to his own horns/tusks, but other than that, a very nice piece.
The fact both pieces were done within an hour is a big plus too, but I think I'm gonna have to give my vote to Karl for this match.
Well, the voting is closed and it's safe to say Karl ran away with this one! If I had to vote, I'd vote for his too! A very entertaining piece of art, his really captured the essence of the character. And it is a damn fine piece of art to boot! The usage of blacks frames the scene perfectly! The gesturing is elegant and thoughtful. Bravo Karl! Mine honestly become a hodge podge of hoo-ha, lol! But I'll get'em next time, no worries!

You gotta give it up to Karl Kerschl, this piece is so complete. and a great gesture of emotion is also a first here at the Iron chef challenge!

You get my vote- now back to drawing Superman!!!

As much as I love Ale's work, I'm really diggin' the scene in this piece, so this one gets my vote!
Both are great...I'd have to give it to Karl.
Good job guys!
Karl wins.
Sheer originality of the piece.
Ditto.
It's all about the elephants.
Karl - beautiful brush work

karl rocks.
i agree, KArl rocks my world!
this one gets my vote. Ale's feels to hulkish which if I remember correctly isn't like maul at all.
I'll vote for Karl.
Karl, wow, you have my vote here, sorry Ale!
You got my vote
Karl really dropped a masterpiece on us. I gotta go with him all the way!
Karl has my vote. I love elephants!
Very nice, gets my vote. Ale's piece is very cool and I reckon would win out most times, but the quietness of the elephants rocks out here.

Talk about apples and oranges. Although both of you guys drew the same character, they couldn't be more different.
Alé's "Hulk-out" Maul is cool just to see him growing and for how huge he gets. It's also got a lot of energy and I love that middle shot where he's screaming his head off too. MAUL SMASH!

Thanks for bringing back the Iron Gelatomettistas Alé and hopefully, you guys can keep it back semi-regularly.
