Texas Chainsaw Massacre page 11 from layout to completion

Hey all-Joel Gomez here with a sampling of my latest efforts-Texas Chainsaw Massacre page 11 with the story "About a Boy," the origin of Leatherface. This page focuses on the character Luda May as she is paid a visit by Thomas Hewitt's (Leatherface) concerned school teacher.

I chose to show this page for its dramatic lighting, and how early in the process I decided on it. I was inspired by Marcelo Frusin, Eduardo Risso, black & white photography...and of course the remake by Marcus Nispel. This story has also given me several opportunites to really amp up the moodiness and contrast required for such a tale.

Not much changed from the layout to finish...but you can see I made sure to work out all the strong lighting with sharpies and white out pens till I had it just like I wanted. Then I blew up the layout at 133% and transferred to artboard. All rendering and details were added later.

Four more pages to go...

Crosspost from Myspace
Iron Chef Battle 2005:
Gelatomettisti Jim Lee vs Mike Turner

Digging through the hard drive unearthed this never before but kind of long and in need of a nice edit clip of me working on a sketch of Nightcrawler and Harley Quinn. For those of you who are not familar with the Gelatometti Iron Chef's the quick scoop.

Conceived by studiomate, Ale Garza, these were online battles organized between various artists, each given an hour to draw a sketch of characters usually chosen by the fans. After the hour expires, both contestants would post up their image and the fans would vote which one they liked best.

Here's the link to the original page where the battle between Mike Turner of Aspen Comics and myself took place back in December of 2005. Mike and I are buds and we agreed beforehand that the sketches would be donated to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund for their various charity auction drives. I've done several of these 'battles' and they are a lot of fun to do and a real challenge and a great way of forcing you to figure out how to imagine, compose and execute your ideas.

The clips are fairly unedited so it runs nearly the entire hour's time so best be really bored to sit down and take it all in...thanks again to Mike for taking part and doing a kickass version himself (seen here: Cached page and the page where mine was posted: My entry).

Here are the clips in order...the artist at the beginning is Ale and he filmed the entire scene.
