Iron Chef Battle 2005:
Gelatomettisti Jim Lee vs Mike Turner

[jimlee]

Digging through the hard drive unearthed this never before but kind of long and in need of a nice edit clip of me working on a sketch of Nightcrawler and Harley Quinn. For those of you who are not familar with the Gelatometti Iron Chef battles...here's the quick scoop.

Conceived by studiomate, Ale Garza, these were online battles organized between various artists, each given an hour to draw a sketch of characters usually chosen by the fans. After the hour expires, both contestants would post up their image and the fans would vote which one they liked best.

Here's the link to the original page where the battle between Mike Turner of Aspen Comics and myself took place back in December of 2005. Mike and I are buds and we agreed beforehand that the sketches would be donated to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund for their various charity auction drives. I've done several of these 'battles' and they are a lot of fun to do and a real challenge and a great way of forcing you to figure out how to imagine, compose and execute your ideas.

The clips are fairly unedited so it runs nearly the entire hour's time so best be really bored to sit down and take it all in...thanks again to Mike for taking part and doing a kickass version himself (seen here: Cached page and the page where mine was posted: My entry).

Here are the clips in order...the artist at the beginning is Ale and he filmed the entire scene.

Thanks for posting these vids Jim. It's amazing to see how you take on a piece and how you progress through it over time. It's actually quite inspirational. Keep up the good work.

hey Jim, thanks for posting these -- cool videos. I think all the battles should be taped from both sides. I'd love to see Turner's process as well.

Very cool, Jim - thanks for letting us catch a glimpse of you really getting down to business. It's funny to realize that it probably takes a lot of time just to come up with an idea before "anything happens."

PS: hope you're well-rested and back into fighting form - when I met you in Toronto it seemed like convention season had been taking its toll on you! ^_^;
