I'm with Mr. Lee...beautiful piece!

Kris Carter said...

Beautiful, just damn beautiful.

Carlo Pagulayan said...

Just lovely. And just being black and white makes it more appropriate for the characters.... and focuses more on the duos relationship rather than an action shot...

Mr. Lee gets my vote.

Tony Diaz said...

gotta give it to jim, altho jim's is more 'cloak' and francis' is more 'dagger', if you get me.

evanmcb said...

Yeah, love Dagger's hair!

Jim's entry just stands out more for me.

SCBD said...

Wow, both pieces look FANTASTIC.

But I gotta go with Jim's effort -- I really like its starkness and the subtlety of C&D's body language.

WHOA!! This was tougher than I thought it'd be!! I lo'e both!

But I gotta go w/ this sexy piece!

Peace...

raph said...

these are both fantastic. seriously. i've got to vote for jim's though because i really like the negative space on dagger.

either way, great job by both artists :)

Brandon O'Donnell said...

I like them both for different reasons, but I've got to give Jim my vote here.

arnie said...

that is just plain beautiful...

peace out

i vote for Jim,
this is my first time seeing
these characters... very cool...

Richard Pace said...

Jim just nailed Cloak. His Dagger doesn't have that impish quality I remember back from when Leonardi was drawing them (FJM got that really well), but you get the feeling of who's the strong one and who's the needy one in the couple here. I'd love to see this coloured.

Packrat said...

My vote here. This is an awesome piece.

Vince said...

I go for Jim !!!!!!!

CrackerJacker said...

Rocks my socks. Nice one.

danielpicci said...

it was tougher than i thought...francis did an awesome piece. his is more comic style and has all the elements and fun you'd see in a comic book...and also added color!

jims piece is just simply beautiful. it gives me an eery feeling. from the composition to cloaks cape an the negative space on dagger. simply a veteran at work. this on a cover would attract me first.

jim has my vote.

Jonathon said...

Nice...another vote for Jim.

Markus Motum said...

The use of negative space for the two contrasting characters is awesome, love Cloaks' hands. Hard to believe this was done in an hour

Mario Alba said...

Excellent black and white masses and composition. It's a tough call, but Jim gets my vote!

Jim all the way

JIM

The man, the myth, the living legend. Jim crushes the outsider! (Wildstorm rulez!) All kidding aside... VERY close call. One of Francis's nicer pieces, but... gotta go with my main man.

carbonknight said...

Been looking forward to this Battle and wasn't disappointed. Great job gents!!! Went with Jim for his faces and great use of negative space but loved Francis's as well. Almost too close to call.
Thanks for the show!

Jim wins it.

MUKESTER said...

Jim gets my vote. Now get back to your drawing board

Rashada Design said...

I am gonna go with the Jim on this one. This picture is sick. It's amazing how he can make the lamest characters looks cool.

Mikey Theil said...

GOGOGOGO JIM LEE BABY!!!

casperOne said...

What made this piece stand out for me was Dagger's hair. I loved it. To be honest though, I was looking for something a little more Power-Girl-esque in Dagger though. Francis definitely wins out in that department, but overall, this gets my vote.

Unknown said...

Got to go with jim for sure.

Unknown said...

WOW. I did not expect this to be such a close call! Both artists really pushed the edge with their peices but I gotta give my vote to Jim. I love how Daggers power swirls and converges on her hand almost creating a vortex with Cloaks cape blowing in the back.

Anonymous said...

My vote's for Jim Lee!!!

Mike V said...

Now that's how you show him what's up! Effective use of negative space with daggers uniform, great design and composition working the cloak into the piece and not making it too overwhelming. Very well done sir.

Sorry Francis,

Jim wins. OMG, thats awesome.

awesome. the black/white is simply too good... vote to Jim Lee :)

SedatOezgen said...

I dont know how you did it, but you did it! On first sight, I thought Francis was the winner, then I looked at both again and was blown away by Jims b&w style I love the way he did the Background, and the guys cape is just amazing! Both great entries, but Jims is a lil bit crazier:)
great stuff!

Russ Sheath said...

Great stuff Jim, you get my vote. Best Russ

Ron Salas said...

Jim has my vote. Fantastic use of pos/neg space.

christian valenzuela said...

wow they are both sick, I love Francis' dagger, but Jim's cloak's cloak, is crazzzy

NA@NA.com said...

Wow, both are really good pieces. I like that Francis used color but the way Jim uses black and white I think gives him the win on this one. Very stunning.

Sal Felix said...

The use of black and white is awesome here, especially love the background.

KidItamae said...

by a nose

NTH said...

Jim Wins for me. Love Manapul but Jim is the master. Get Silvestri or turner or Quesada or anyone Jim will beat them everytime.

Chris said...

Jim -

You rocked the house -

Just awesome!

The Hero Maker said...

I would have to say that Jim's piece is better! I like the use of the B&W and also the faces are much better! The other is good but he is no Jim Lee!

Broneal said...

you can't out white-out the white-out MASTA!!!1

Jim destroyed it this time. The use of negative space as positive space in the representation of this symbiotic relationship is genius. just an all around stunning piece. this is yet another example of why jim lee is a superhero.

eBas said...

I must say it was closer than i would like. In fact, im a little dissapionted in Jim for making it so close. But he still pulled it off. Jim Lee is Jim Lee

Sorry Fransis, and like Agnes would ever vote against you.

Unknown said...

Wow. Just plain wow. Fantastic contrast. I love this piece.

Pidder Pan said...

great piece! i wish they would auction it

Remi said...

Its a different fandom out there...

I find Lee's pic as more grace. The hands, way he holds her. the poses are more gestural. and cloak..empty space bellow his head..lol thats great you can see this better with the white spots.

Francis's is great, thumbs up for colors, Francis is not affraid of trying new things as he sketches. But i dont feel the buildings behind really adds, and Daggers pose is confusing to me.

So one for Jim.

Super Edco said...

OMG, Manapul is so close. But that haircut, yum!

Justin said...

yeah, I think Jim might have this one. So much in their body language.

LM said...

Jim Lee's looks more professional. You can see traces of Mr.Lee's work in Franci's work.
If Francis wins,Jim wins.

COMIKXGUY said...

my reason is the same as lucio's

jim's poses, jim's effects, jim's female face in mr. manapul's

so jim gets mine as well

if it was completely different than jim's i would have had a easier time

Michael E. Pritchard said...

Even though Mr. "3-0" added perspective and action, the piece Jim does here has more movement in it. I mean the cape is ridiculous, flowing this way and that and the powers swirling around Dagger's hand also adds to the movement around the environment.
Awesome Job Mr. Lee You got my vote. Keep it fuid.

Unknown said...

Nice crisp lines.....the glowing light effect achieved with simple black and white is impressive. This one has my vote.

Fatboy73 said...

You just can't beat jim for page layouts and sheer draftsmanship.
Jim rocks!

ANMPH said...

I vote Lee all the way, Much better overall compensition.

Brade said...

Jim Lee will win any contest he's involved in. We shouldn't give others false hope...

gotta go with jim, cloak looks awesome and the effects are great too. the ink wash look along the edges is great.

p.s. u gotta play halo with joel and i some time!

Both are nice but overall composition goes to Jim.

Jim,Jim,Jim there isn´t another possible response

Unknown said...

Yeah, this sorta broke the mold for C&D in my mind...rethought pieces of them to be way cooler than ever before...magnificent...

Ashigaru said...

This piece works because it makes sense to me. I kept looking at Francis' C&D, and kept wondering... "Why is she upside down?" It is very dynamic, though.

Still, Jim pulls off the win by interesting technique, and a connection between the characters that is absolute. His hands on her waist? Yeah... there's gotta be a connection there... Just a trifle stiff in her pose, though. Maybe it tickles, and she just tightened up a bit. That and well... she's a bit more realistically endowed.

Ok, sorry... blathering...

Unknown said...

Manapul put up a good piece and against another may have pulled it off but Jim owns this one hands down.

j said...

Design and execution are why I think Jim won this battle. Great job to both competitors and thanks for keeping the blog interesting :)

Jim wins again! Untouchable.

Unknown said...

Two really different images. The focal point on the other is more the movement, but I end up ignoring the woman's face. I"m also confused about the dynamic between the two characters.

Here, the face is the first thing I notice, followed by the hand on her waist. I am able to get a stronger sense of something of a connection, whether romantic or possessive, between two characters.

If this were a front page or cover, I'm more likely to pick up this book than the other image.

Line Medic said...

jim, Well done. The image has movement and mood with radiation.
It's amazing to compare this image to the 1988 cloak and dagger #3 cover you did. You keep getting better with inovative art style. THANKS

Jason Johnson said...

Jim's the man! Of course the vote swings thattaway.

Skull_Leader said...

Jim's piece wins. Best C&D I can remember since Rick Leonardi was drawing them.

Vittorio Giorgi said...

Brilliant. Vote for Jim!!

TrevorAMueller said...

I like Jim's the best. Sorry, Francis.

syrtheone said...

I have to admit that Francis piece is more dynamic, showing action and movement (though the perspective on the enregy beans could have been more dramatic) Jim just has a talent unmatched to bring out the essence of a character more; very atmospheric and the mood says C&D without a doubt.

Jim has it!! As usual well done.
