DC Comics goes digital

Not only could you walk into your local comic book store today to pick up your favorite DC title, but now you can also read it online thanks to DC Comics' partnership with comiXology and PlayStation to distribute their books online.

There was definitely a lot of buzz around the WildStorm office today as everyone worked to see the future of comics open right in front of us. It was a mixture of celebration, relief and laser focus as the day wore on with deadlines looming all around.

The White Hot Room

Hey Ya'lls, how's it going? Here is a 'Dark Phoenix' that I did this weekend for fun, practice and for sale of course;)

I wanted her to look dark, creepy, euphoric and angelic, as if she was just materializing in the 'White Hot Room'.

I'm really happy with how it came out, hope you likes;)

Happy 30th, Empire!

As any fellow Star Wars fanatic knows, this year is the 30th Anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back. My favorite movie of all time.

I always thought "Empire" showed Darth Vader at his most hardcore (Brutally mauling his own son, torturing Han Solo because he enjoys it, ordering his own fleet into an asteroid field and patiently waiting as it gets beat to hell, making a habit of choking his own officers, constantly changing the terms of a deal seemingly only because he likes screwing with Lando's mind, conspiring against his own Master, and generally not giving a %&#^).

And, the moment when Vader goes in with the ground troops raiding the rebel base during the battle of Hoth. I always liked that he doesn't care that there's a warzone all around him and he's going in on foot. With this painting, I wanted to pay homage to that scene with one of those "could have happened off-screen!" moments.

The idea here is that the Walker in the center has been brought down by rebel fire, but in true Vader fashion-he just doesn't care, and is strolling straight through the warzone toward the rebel base. I really worked on the atmospheric perspective here so that it looked similar to the film's colors.

Teen Art Cafe at the San Diego Museum of Art

Hey All, on Wednesday June 2nd, "Brightest Day" and "Soulfire" colorist, Beth Sotelo and myself had a chance to speak to the young folks at Teen Art Cafe at the San Diego Museum of Art, an after-school student program that was celebrating a recently opened exhibit of "Heroes: Mortals & Myths in Ancient Greece." Sticking to the theme, Beth and I had a chance to help kids draw heroes of a 'modern mythology', based on Greek history and the origins of Greek heroes.

We helped kids 'invent' or draw their favorite heroes. I took the opportunity to use Batman in my demo and touch a little on his origin and his place in modern mythology. Beth was able to showcase that heroes come in many shapes and sizes and don't require a cape or batarangs by drawing her original characters 'Grumps'.

The experience was a blast and the kids really enjoyed the variety of possibilities with the range of shapes and sizes a hero can come in, and I felt I learned a thing or two about kids and who they felt are our modern heroes are. Beth and I look forward to seeing them again.

Thanks to all who stopped by our booth in Phoenix and thanks to the exhibitor for all the hospitality, it was a great show!

I started to do these 'Baby/Chibi' drawings for fun and cause the show draws in a lot of manga fans, so I wanted to do something for the girls to enjoy...(and buy;)

Phoenix Comicon May 27-30, 2010

This weekend's not only Memorial Day weekend, but it's also the Phoenix Comicon for some of us! There's even a Preview Night going on right now, but we'll be there from Friday to Saturday in booth 100-101 at the front of the show. And don't forget to check out our "This is WildStorm" panel on Saturday 12:00pm - 1:00pm (CC157) too!

This is our first time in Phoenix and we'll have tons of free comics and buttons to giveaway, plus the usual sketches and con goodies for sale. Hope to see you there!

Earth Fringe

Another fun project that came through WildStorm recently were these alternate takes on famous DC covers. A lot of fans commission their favorite artist to recreate covers like this, but these appeared on last night's Fringe season finale thanks to chief creative officer Geoff Johns, writer/producer/director Akiva Goldsman, executive producer Jeff Pinker and WildStorm's general manager Hank Kanalz.

It doesn't get much more memorable than these covers and on a show that's highlighted details like NBA star, Len Bias still being alive or "The Obamas set to move into new White House" on newspaper headlines, it's a cool peek at life Over There.

Yesterday's birthday boy, Carlos D'Anda drew the Justice League #1 cover and, with the help of JJ Kirby and Michael Lopez, finished the Crisis on Infinite Earths #7. Colors are by JJ Kirby and Carrie Strachan, respectively and our own Randy Mayor colored the Red Lantern/Red Arrow cover by Ivan Reis and Oclair Albert. Larry Berry also created the Superman Returns and Death of Batman #75 covers with help from fellow art director, Ed Roeder.
