Why so MAD!?

entry ricH

Here's a piece of fan art I did recently. I found a scan of the pencils online (obviously the piece is from the great Joe Madureira and his new Ultimates book) and it looked fun to ink.

I did it as a step by step so you can check out the entire process at: deviant

Why oh why are you not inking this series.

Why oh why are you not inking Leinil Yu's New Avengers.

I'm not against straight-to-colour work in principal, but you'd elevate the work of those two artists so much it's criminal.

I'm gonna agree with James here. I'd actually buy the book if it were inked. Beautiful, Rich.

Awesome, man!...How time take you ink this?

A!

This looks a 1000 times better than the comic and it ISN'T EVEN COLORED! I'd buy a BW version of this book if it was inked ... so sick, it's disgusting. Props!

The 1st comment by James couldn't be more right....If anyone ever asks what an Inker in needed for you're a great example on why we will never be without inkers...

cool thanks.

It was fun to do and honestly it wasn't too complicated compared to other things I've done. This style comes pretty naturally to me...I've inked Campbell, Bachalo, Ale' Garza, it's all in the same ball park and it something I feel like I understand and it comes from the gut.

:)

the piece took about 7 to 10 hours to do. It took almost as long scanning and doing all the posts for the step by step.

definitely check it out....There's 12 steps all total....plus three different size final scans.

AND THAT IS WHY I TELL PEOPLE TO APPRECIATE YOU ARTISTS WHO POST IN THE FIRST PLACE

IT'S APPRECIATED BY ME ATLEAST :)

IT REALLY TAKES SOME TIME TO POST SOMETHING AND ALL YOU GET IN RETURN IS A BUNCH OF LURKERS AND VERY FEW COMMENTS THAT AFTER A WHILE IT BECOMES A CHORE THAT LOOSES ITS IMPORTANCE COMPAIRED WITH MORE IMPORTANT JOBS

LIKE GETTING BOOKS OUT ON TIME AND COMMISSIONS

WHICH IS WHY ALOT OF OTHERS TAKE WAAAAAAAAAAAY TOO LONG TO POST SOMETHING NEW OR JUST POST SOMETHING LAME

I MEAN COME ON! 7 TO 10 HOURS TO SCAN AND POST! THAT'S UNREAL!

This looks great, Rich. I like the printed pencil/color only version, but your version certainly has a unique strength I would love to see in print. I think they should have done a fully inked/colored version of this book and a special pencils only edition to showcase Joe's incredible stuff in the raw.

Anyway, awesome work, thanks for taking the time to share!

Great job by a great inker. Kicks the hell out of the printed, straight to colors version.

This looks fantastic! I bought the ultimates book but was disappointed in the "straight to color" on the pencils. Don't get me wrong, I think both the pencils and colors are great but a nice inker would have really made the whole thing stronger.

Rich, after seeing your take on Joe Mad's pencils maybe they'll reconsider. One can only hope.

I was really surprised honestly on the response to the piece. I hoped people would like it but it's been really overwhelming.

I think the fans have spoken. I don't know what effect it will have but I appreciate all the posts.

It really was not the reason I did it at all. I did it for fun only. When I see cool art, or have an idea...I am very impulsive. I just go for it and that's always when I do my best work....

I will post some after thoughts on my deviant page tonight. It's been an interesting experience doing this and I was again really surprised by the response.

crazy times in comics....

just like the UFC.

Seriously, this is a great piece. Should've been inked for sure.

Blasterkid said...

Thanks. I think it's easy in hindsight to say 'well the book should have been inked.' On paper before it was announced I don't think it was completely apparent which direction that would all go. It could have been great and set a new trend and template for all future books.

They made a choice we'll just have to see how it all ends up.

This is what I was waiting for! I can't even see Joe's line work in that murky comic print. So disappointing for Mad fans, and I am sure especially Joe himself. Rich your inks are spot on and masterful. I feel like I had cataracts removed and I can finally see.
