Hey y'alls, how's it going?!? long time no see! (^_^)

... you know, for the longest time, I just wasn't sure what to write about that I hadn't already done a bunch of times in the past, then after that, good ol' procrastination and deadlines took over. :)

Anyway, I wanted to jump back in and become active on the 'Metti again, so here I am.

... you know, I've been meaning to ask a question to all of you who visit us: what are you interested in more specifically? what would you like us to write more about? do you like the finished drawings posted on here? or are sketches and 'prelims' more informative? We (at the studio) try and think about what would be cool to show fans on the blog, maybe things that WE would have liked to have seen before we became 'pros', but really, when it's all said and done, we've been at this 'professionally' for quite some time, and it can give you a bit on tunnel vision, SO, ball's on your side of the court ... what would you like to see more of?!?

... oh yeah, and just in case you guys don't know what my next 'gig' is, this is a sketch idea for a DEATHBLOW cover, my next project for WILDSTORM with 'Mr.100 Bullets' himself, Brian Azzarello (and yes, I am grinning from ear to ear at this moment) :)

alright y'alls, glad to be back!

Basically, I would like to read and view everything that you would like to post ;)

The Iron Chef battles and videos are really cool, the various sketches and finished pieces are amazing and it's really great to hear you guys talk about upcoming projects you are working on.

Right now, I think it would be informative to tell us how the Artist Search went and the insight you guys have gained from it.

I love seeing the whole process. Sketches all the way through to the finished piece. Can't see enough of that kind of stuff.

I'd like to see quicktime movies of the start and finish of pieces. Just to see how it is approached.

I like everything you guys post, but I would love to see more videos of y'all drawing. (Sí, lo sé: muy original.)

Welcome back! I personally love seein' more of both final drawings and preliminary sketches.

Final drawings of characters or landscapes that we usually wouldn't be able to see from y'all individually (i.e. Jim's sketches of John Stewart and Supergirl).

Preliminary sketches that clue us in on yo' respective processes and progression related to character designs, experimentations w/ other media, and unused art.

Congrats on Deathblow!!

Peace...

I like the sketches and pencils, the things that you don't get to see in your published work. I'd really love to see some progression - like thumbnails to more polished sketches and drawings. Things that show the process really help get to know the artist.

It seems some artists build up "flesh out" their drawings, where it looks like Jim Lee seems to have some very awesome contours of characters instead, and that's the stuff I love seeing.

The finished work is cool, but it seems like the copies are too small to fully appreciate and I'll end up seeing it in the store anyways.

I'd love to see videos recorded from the Cintiq (if you guys are getting to use it much) similar to Brian Haberlin's coloring tutorials using Camtasia. That would be incredible to really see the process unfold in front of us.

I'm really just grateful that you guys do as much as you do. It's awesome to see what's going on "behind the scenes".

Thanks!

I think I agree with Meek about wanting to see artwork that doesn't make it to the printed page (both finished or in progress).

I also really like to see finished pencils, before the inks and colors. Thanks for taking suggestions.

Ditto that last comment - blogs about tools/supplies are really cool and helpful to me. And I love the sketches, but would love to see the actual "building" of sequential pages in addition to the pinup/cover images. Not that you guys aren't posting a phenomenal amount of info as it is :) Thanks for a great blog!

Some more Contests! Sketches, pencilled work in a large format (for those aspiring inkers out there), Iron Chef battles. Oh, and some more contests

It's cool to see character sketches, though I'm far more interested in your (Wildstorm's) take on an elaborate perspective shot, say, like a cityscape that isn't just traced. I imagine that when you deal with perspective problems on a daily basis, you devise shortcuts that would streamline the, often, tedious process. But I'm not going to angle for trade secrets without something in exchange...a quick method that I discovered for establishing diagonal vanishing points in any given panel is to take the distance from the center of vision to the farthest edge of the panel and double it (the distance). That will provide you with those points and also the station point in a snap along with a scene within a 52.5 degree cone of vision - which is exactly between the 45 and 60 degree guidelines that every book I've ever read on the subject recommends. And I've got more techniques that occurred to me during episodes of perspective induced psychoses...

I'm also interested if Jim is able to utilize his Cintiq for quality linework in reference to the previous post on the matter.

Thanx for asking.

hey Carlos,

thanks for asking us fans what we'd like to see on blog... Personally, I think it would be cool to have a semi-frequent art lesson for us wannabes... maybe give us a drawing assignment or something...? (realizing you guys don't have time to critique everyone, but it could still be fun) How about show some more prelims or progressions of work from sketch to completion, pencils to inks to colors? I'd love to see some coaching from Rich on inking technique how to's...

spinkick said...

... also to add to my previous post: more videos would be cool -- I loved the Jim Lee how to from way back... and the Iron Chef battles are my absolute favorite thing about this blog.

I keep on checking here 'cause I'm a huge WildStorm geek. Art wise, I like to see experimentation; stuff that we don't usually see from you guys in the comics field for whatever reason. The stuff that Rich does is amazing, Jim's digital experiments not too long ago, Ale's pinups of various colors, all that kinda stuff is immensely cool. It's nice to see a group of guys doing stuff, or posting stuff, on the 'net that they don't have to.

The only thing that would make this place infinitely cooler were ninja pinups, zombies, and doodles of Harley Quinn.

I stumbled across your site a while back and visit regularly now, not only to enjoy looking at the artwork but also because I am an illustrator myself (although diff. subject matter) now freelancing... and I miss the fun of seeing other artists' work in progress (as one does in a studio/ art dept).
Visiting your site reminds me how much I love comics and storytelling, and keeps me connected with the world of those of us who draw for a living. I see your pencils, and I know a little about you!
Keep up the great work, and thanks for taking the time to put it out here for us.

As an aspiring hobbist artist I really enjoy watching videos and learning the techniques you use to create your art. I learned quite a bit from some of the short QT films you did in the past watching Jim, Carlos, Ale, and Rich create in the Iron Gelatometti competitions.

Hey Guys,
I think tutorials on how you guys do what you do are the greatest. Show us how you pencil, ink, and color. Talk about the process of making a comic. Get some writers up on this site!
I am not really a fan of the iron chef battles. They are fun, but at the end of the day I personally don't feel like I am walking away with much.
The contests you have for the fans are fun. Also any previews and sketches you guys do are great. Whether they are comic related or not. Rich's paintings of the Mars Volta were neat to look at. I am all about the techniques and materials used. I would love to see more QT videos of you guys doing your thing. Someone other than Jim too. We all know and love Jim but we want to see the rest of you guys in action.
Take a look at the Gnomon Workshop DVDs as a template to go by.
That is my two cents...

Loved the Videos, Iron Chef battles and when there was the Jim Lee page posted and people inked over it.

It would be nice to have a little fact sheet that goes along with each art page that is posted. Something that helps the viewer get in the mind of the artist.
Jim makes a point to always describe his medium to the reader at times and this great
If there was a small spreadsheet with maybe 5 or 10 established questions for the artist to quickly answer regarding their work, more of the readers would be able to get a step towards understand what's behind the pen and ink rather then just seeing the product. In turn this would also help the artist remember what they used and what thoughts were going on in their minds.
At the same time this might require too much work and discourage artists from posting.
Keep posting and thanks.

I'm diggin' everything y'all are doing but you guys really need only one thing...more Sandra Hope! Dayuum she's stunnin'! Is she still married? If not, does she like chocolate?...'cuz my kisses are sweeter than Hershey's...holla back Sandra!
