NY Con Artist

NY Con Artist

[jimlee]

Here is a scan of a Gambit sketch I did for a fan at the recent Big Apple Con. There is a matching one which is similar but different...which is a side story all onto itself.

Been very busy recently and am on the road. Back in New York for a series of meetings and a video interview planned for an upcoming DVD. In fact, it's one of two lined up for upcoming superhero movies.

My big question is...does anyone watch these extras?

I occasionally rewatch films with the director's commentary on but it's a real luxury to find that time. There is so much else to do...

BTW here is a larger scan of the sketch.

With DVD extras, i typically go through them either immediatly after first DVD viewing or the next night. Recently, i don't watch the deleted scene cause i find that they were left out of the movie for a reason. Commentaries are saved for art time so i have something interesting to listen to while i work rather than just music.

Hey Jim,
I really spend time checking out the extras on DVD's. I think they are very hit and miss, and I think it depends on the movie and the movie maker as to whether you get an excellent bunch of extras, or simply a bunch of TV specials. I guess it depends on the sucess of the movie as to whether they justify the extras too.
Recently I really enjoyed Collateral's extras ( a fantastic commentary by Michael Mann)Black Hawk Down Special Edition (probably one of the best special edition DVDs going) and the special edition of Aliens.

Super Hero movie wise, I think they have been a bit hit and miss, I think most of Marvel's DVD releases have been pretty cool, but tend to repeat themselves a little and some of the extra content is clearly aimed at kids. I'm looking forward to the Tim Burton Batman special edition.

I guess as a comic fan maybe I am interested in seeing my fav artists and writers comment on DVDs such as Unbreakable and the Spider-man than the average joe may be, simply because unless you can get to a con or an appearance, its the only chance to see Jim Lee talk about what he does for a living. Personally I think its really cool to see. Did you see Todd McFarlane on the Alien V Predator DVD. I remember seeing you, Jim, on a DVD all about superheroes along with a bunch of people like John Romita Jr.
Tell you what I really enjoyed, was a CD rom on the making of Daredevil Guardian Devil (the limited edition hardcover),it had a commentary a bunch of stuff.
Have you ever thought about doing a making of cd rom or DVD Jim?

Are you kidding? The best features on the Daredevil and the Spidey discs are the creator interviews! Man, that Gene Colan interview gets me every time...

DVD Extras are good depending on what it is. For example, any of the Kevin Smith movies on DVDs will have great extras. Director's commentary, actors commentary, deleted scenes, etc.

I'll check out the extras from time to time. Sometimes extras are hit or miss. I won't acknowledge trailers as extras like some DVD's do. I wished certain DVD's would include the extras on the disc (Mulholland Dr.) I look for commentaries, deleted scenes and featurettes. I will usually buy a dvd with extras rather than get a bare bones copy. So I gotta agree with Missleman, extra features means extra good times. Hey Jim, what 2 upcoming dvds can we find your interviews?

I'm a geek for DVD extras (with my personal fave being a tie between the "Men Without Fear" interviews on the second disc of Daredevil and the "making of" featurettes on the Incredibles DVDs). When I'm trying to finish something on a deadline I'll prop up a mini DVD player and put one of those puppies in, since I can listen to it without having to watch more than glancing up every now and then.

I don't have ALWAYS so much time to see all the extras in DVD, so I usually wait for somebody who already seen it all, to know what to see and what it's crap.
Anyway I always try to see the interview with the creators, they're good. Maybe in the Comicbook cases, they don't say as mush as I would like to know (that's also, maybe, complaining about editors). But whatever.

And, oh, Jim. I rent Catwoman the last week-- I saw you in the extras. Looking at Halle. not in the eyes. ;)

I try to watch the extras, especially deleted scenes, alternate endings, bloopers, concept art galleries, and storyboards. The way I see it, the extras and the quality are the reasons I buy DVDs in the first place, so might as well try to squeeze every penny outta the investment. On occasion, if I'm interested enough in what the people involved have to say, I'll even sit through commentaries if/when time permits. If you're doin' interviews for 2 upcomin' superhero movies, that would be more than enough to guarantee from me the purchase of those DVDs in the first place. How early can you disclose information on which 2 you're doin'?

*Side note: The colored versions of All-Star Batman & Robin rock!!

Peace...

I tend to watch the extras on DVDs of movies I really really dig. Like I'll sit down and watch the cast interviews for THE PRINCESS BRIDE but not for DODGEBALL. So it depends on the movie and whether or not there seems to merit any "behind the scenes" or "creator interview" type segments. HELLBOY obviously had tons of behind the scenes stuff to show that was cool: makeup, sets, stunts, etc. But I'm not gonna watch it for just any old movie. I dunno, there's no hard and fast rule in my DVD library really.

But frankly, I'd watch an entire extra segment if it was you being interviewed or showing your work or whatever. But I'm still not gonna go see CATWOMAN. The whole costume looked bad and I had no interest in it even before it got panned. Sorry, Jim; no offense or nothing.

It depends on the movie and on what the actual extras are, but yeah, I usually go through all of them. Not all at once, but eventually.

Like the Lord of the Rings flicks, I've only sat through all the extras on the first one so far. Haven't gotten to the other two yet, but I plan on it...sooner or later.

I usually watch the DVD extras, but sometimes they can be really boring or just plain bad, like the ones on Ghost in the Shell. Those were both bad and boring. There was so much they could have done to make them dynamic and interesting. Being both artistic and technical, I enjoy when the DVD extras explain technical aspects, or artistic considerations, the hows and the whys.

i guess, catwoman would be one of those DVDs, right? with you on it, then i guess i finally found my reason to watch the movie.

OMG! J. Scott Campbell!!

Whoops... sorry for geekin'-out.
:-X lol...

I also enjoyed the extras on Daredevil. On top o' the comic book creator interviews, it's nice to know the creators o' the film had, @ some point, as much frustration workin' w/ Ben Affleck as I had w/ watchin' him play Murdock. :T

For me, extras do save the feature @ times. One example: the extra features & commentaries by Geoff Johns and Mark Waid on the first season of The Challenge of the Superfriends totally saved my perception of the cartoon. When I first watched the DVDs, I wondered WTH I ever saw in this as a kid. Listenin' to the commentaries brought me back and reminded me why the episodes were so great.

The Family Guy commentaries are also fun as hell w/ Seth MacFarlane and co.

Peace...

Dang, every time I hear about you coming to NY it's after the fact. I have to catch up more quickly with my blog reading. :) Hope you had fun, and left before our recent "cold and dank spell."
