coachin it up...

coachin it up...

[ale]

A little tidbit of inside info on me.

For the past 4 years now I have been coaching soccer. heh, it's quite funny when you think about it because i never really played the sport growing up. I began coaching simply to spend time with my kids. As it's turned out, I have now become a regular on the sidelines, and is each season called upon to help out. It's pretty crazy because I basically had to take crash courses on what it is to play soccer. Since then, I've grown to really love the sport and appreciate what a difficult game it really is. I never pictured myself as a coach growing up, but now there is no other alternative. It's great being able to motivate the kids, and share this experience with them. It's awesome to see a child go from not having ever played the game, to grow, and become a skilled player. my daughter Brittany has been playing since she was barely 5, at 8 she's one of the best defenders in the divison. It's an honor to donate my time to these kids, and I can't picture any better way to spend my saturday
mornings.

Ale,
I used to coach 8 year olds playing soccer. At first I thought it would be a fun way to waste time but then after about a two weeks into I was taking it way too seriously. During games on the sidelines I would be jumping up and down arguing with the ref. It was kind of comical actually and I know players had a good time which is all that matters but it is interesting to see what happens when you mix an adult into a group of 8 year olds. You sort of see who the real "mature" one is...
On that note, your schedule must be insane, how do you fit it all in!?

You have an eight year old? You look like you're barely 12 yourself in your pictures! Not slamming you, man, I'm saying you're aging pretty damned well. But I do think it's funny that you got the skullie cap on even while on the pitch in this most recent photo. And you don't have to explain the feeling of gratified satisfaction from being with the kids. I miss my quasi-step-kids like hell (don't ask, long story). Anyway, I'm glad the newest Garza's got such an enthusiastic father. Be well, Ale

Ale,
I could have easily signed my name to what you wrote above. I just finished the fall season with my 8 year old daughter and her team that I've had since they were 5, and I too have had to learn all about soccer, which is now one of my favorite sports to watch. I wasn't interested in coaching, but I was always at all of the practices and got recruited. I even bought all the crap that you need to play it so I could join one of the adult leagues we have here, but that wil have to wait for a little while. Anyway, for me, coaching (I also help out with my 10 year old son's team who was inspired to play by watching his younger sister) was what inspired me to go back to school and become an elementary teacher instead of my dream of becoming a comic artist. By the way I graduate in 7 weeks. Thanks for the post!!

Great way to spend time with your kids. Even if it is soccer. My nephew, who turns four in a couple months, just started playing the game. Basically, all the kids just run around haphazardly and attempt to kick the ball...except for the one kid who keeps laying down on the field in the fetal position, using the ball as a pillow...

You could become the Snoop Dogg of the comic's world. I read somewhere that he coached his son's Pop Warner football team to their championship or something like that...
